ADHD Testing in Brooklyn
Understanding & Managing ADHD in our Park Slope & Bay Ridge offices
We all have a hard time focusing at times. Stress and excitement can make it difficult to pay attention or leave us struggling to focus, but for those diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), this feeling of overstimulation is a frequent occurrence. Clinical psychologist, Dr. Deborah De Santis-Moniaci, provides ADHD evaluations for children, teens and young adults at both of our Brooklyn office locations in Park Slope and Bay Ridge.
What is ADHD?
ADHD is a common condition, affecting more than 3 million people in the US each year. It is characterized by difficulty controlling the “executive functions.” These functions allow us to focus, make decisions, organize and access short and long term memories, and interact with our day to day environments. When the brain fails to properly develop the ability to control executive functions, impulsivity and hyperactivity can result. In children, you may see behaviors like forgetting to do homework (or never hearing the assignment in the first place), struggles with calming down or problems going to bed. Adults with ADHD can have difficulty maintaining relationships or keeping up with their responsibilities at work. Some of the common indicators that you may be dealing with ADHD include:
Difficulty maintaining concentration across settings (school, work, home)
Lack of attention to detail or difficulty remembering details
Hyperactive behaviors like fidgeting or an inability to sit still
Impulsivity or difficulty controlling urges

What Happens During Testing for ADHD?
There is no single test that can definitively diagnose ADHD. Instead, we may use a full neuropsychological assessment battery to ensure the most accurate diagnosis. This can include interviews and observation, review of academic or professional performance, rating scales, and other assessment tools. If you or your child had past testing or assessments, please bring that information in for us to review.
